A pair of temple lions, foo dogs, in red lacquer with worn gilt, which is exactly how you want them. One has a cub beneath her paw and the other a brocade ball beneath his, the usual pairing of female with the young and male with the world. Each sits on a stepped plinth carved with lotus, about 25 cm tall. The paint has softened with age, mostly around the bases, but nothing is broken or lost. Stand them either side of a door, a hearth or a run of books and they do their old job, which is to look after the place.
