A pair of horses in the Tang manner, glazed in the running amber, green and straw colours the Chinese call sancai 三彩, or three-colour. The Tang originals were made for tombs, and potters have gone on making them ever since simply because they are so good to look at. One here stands with its head up, the other with its head lowered, both saddled and caparisoned on rectangular plinths. The colour is bright and glossy and I can see no damage; the bare patches under the bases are how they were made, not chips. A confident pair for a console or a bookcase.
