Guanyin 觀音, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, sits with a pink lotus, painted in blue and white and finished with a good deal of gilt. She rises from a busy little base where a dragon and a phoenix flank a vase: mercy above, good fortune below. She also holds a small vase, which traditionally pours out the nectar of compassion or healing water to ease suffering. There is a whole on the back which you can pour water and it will drop from her vase to the dragon's mouth, symbolizing the healing water. At about 38 cm she has real presence. The gilding has rubbed in places and there is some staining to the robe, both in the photos, but nothing is chipped or missing.
